Job Description

As a Volunteer Firefighter, you will be required to perform a wide variety of tasks. These tasks are very diverse and may include rescue and care of victims; fire prevention; cleanup; hazardous materials containment; and/or community service.

Emergency Response

Emergency response and duties include, but is not limited to the following:
  • Response to calls any time of day or night.
  • Response to the firehouse in a quick and safe manner for all types of calls
  • Response to different types of calls which include:
    • Structure fires
    • Brush fires
    • Motor vehicle accidents
    • Alarm activations
    • False alarms
  • Ability to immediately size up each emergency call upon arrival which includes:
    • Properties of the fire
    • Probability of the fire spreading
    • The needs of any victims
    • Medical conditions of any victims
    • Weather conditions
  • Ability to quickly gather information from witnesses
  • Ability to work as a team

Fire Scenes

Firefighting is a dangerous occupation. Once at a scene a firefighter must:
  • Locate the source of any fires
  • Locate any victims
  • Extinguish any fires
  • Bring any victims to safety
Firefighting is physically demanding. Firefighters must have the ability to:
  • Carry 80 - 100 lbs. of equipment
  • Carry victims to safety
  • Climbs several flights of stairs
  • Force entry into buildings
  • Ventilate structures (breaking windows or cutting holes in the roof)
  • Evaluate conditions within a structure to assess the safety of the operations

Rescue Operations

Firefighters provide various types of rescue services, which include:
  • Systematic searches for trapped victims
  • Free trapped victims from various situations
    • Car crashes
    • Cave ins
    • Structure collapses
    • Flood waters
    • Chemical spills


Firefighters operate in the safest manner possible. All precautions are taken to ensure the safety of each firefighter and any victims.
